Tamale’s first animation productions
ANIMATION Africa and the Industrial Art department of the Tamale Polytechnic organized its first animation
training programme in northern Ghana. The programme dubbed SAVANNAH DIGITAL MEDIA WORKSHOPS AND
CONFERENCE had 55 participants who were students of the polytechnic participating in the introductory
programme
Opening the 3 day training session, the Rector of Tamale Polytechnic Alhaji Yakubu Seidu Pelikah reminded
participants of the changes in technology and i t’s effect on art and design and the need to recognise
animation as an effective and powerful means of communicating, He welcomed the training programme as
coming at a time when the Polytechnic is considering new programme in its expansion programme.
The workshop took participants through concept development, digital storytelling principles and techniques
; introduction to digital imaging and video editing software. The workshop provided a platform for students
to learn, diversify their skill and art and explore new techniques to help them in educating and communicating
Participants developed their own concepts and were guided by resource person from Animation Africa to
produced 4 one minute short animations using digital photographs, illustrations and graphics. Participants
used digital media tools in creating their projects which were designed to promote strengthen and sustain
democracy. The training faculty was made up of Samuel Quartey, Frank Tetteh, Salamatu Yakubu, Nii Tei Mensah
and George Opare.
SCHOOLS PROJECT
Organisers of the event had presentations for senior secondary students of St Charles, Tamale and Ghana
senior High Schools. The sessions were designed to promote animation and offer students with interest in visual
arts and ICT the opportunity to explore creatively using digital media tools to design their own digital video
projects. Interested students in these schools will have the opportunity send stories or comic strip to tell a story
on good governance or democracy in a competition that will offer winners free training in digital media production.
Animation Africa believes that Tamale and the Northern region has a unique ethnic and political and culture;
and believe that an engagement with the academia, advocacy, and youth groups will help design relevant
advocacy and change projects to help in informing and educating the local population with relevant examples
and in their own languages.
The SAVANNAH DIGITAL MEDIA WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCE ends a series of digital media training
programmes sponsored by the Embassy of the United States of America in Accra.
